Labor Day Weekend is right around the corner, meaning the return of the PGA Tour to Massachusetts is fast approaching. The 2015 PGA Deutsche Bank Championship will be played at TPC Boston in Norton, MA from September 4th through September 7th, which got us wondering what local talent might have a shot at being the next Jordan Spieth. We took a look at nearby colleges to identify the top up-and-coming, homegrown golf prospects playing Division I golf in Massachusetts.
Hailing from Wilbraham, MA is Boston College Freshman golf star Matt Naumec. During his high school career, Matt was named to the First Team All-Scholastic Western Massachusetts team and was Second Team All-American. Matt also received the MVP award three times during his high school career. At Boston College, Matt is enrolled in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences as an Economics major and is looking to continue his successful career on the course.
Also playing for Boston College is Junior Captain Patrick Oleksak. From Feeding Hills, MA, Patrick attended Agawam High where he was named to the All-Western Mass First team four times and also received the preseason Super 7 Award three times. Academically, Patrick received the Book Award for English and History while in high school and is currently enrolled in the Carroll School of Management as a finance major. In 2012 he finished 9th in U.S. Open Local Qualifying, and finished 3rd for his team at the 2014 ACC Championships.
In Central Massachusetts, at the College of Holy Cross, is Freshman Jake Peer. Jake, who lives in Woburn, MA, attended Arlington Catholic High School where he played two seasons of varsity golf. As a Senior, Jake was named a captain as well as the Catholic Central League MVP. In his junior year Jake was selected as a conference All-Star and led the team to a 2014 Massachusetts North Sectional Championship. As a freshman and sophomore, Jake played varsity golf at Mount Olive where he qualified for the Massachusetts 2015 Open and participated in the 2013-2014 Junior Amateur.
Also at the College of Holy Cross is junior Captain Connor McGuirk. Connor, born in Lexington MA, attended St. Sebastian’s High School where he played three seasons of varsity golf and received captainship as both a Junior and Senior. While in college, Connor has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and is a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy. As a Sophomore Matt shot a career low 77 at the Northeast Challenge and fired off a two round score of 165 (83-82) at the New England Division I Championships.
The pros will be in town next weekend, but keep an eye on these four players as the future golf stars of Massachusetts.
